IV Sedation
For some patients, anxiety or the complexity of an oral surgery procedure can make treatment feel overwhelming. IV sedation can help appropriate patients feel more relaxed and comfortable during surgical care.
Center for Oral Surgery offers IV sedation as part of selected oral surgery and implant procedures. Dr. Christopher Duplaga evaluates each patient’s health history, planned procedure, and individual needs before determining whether sedation is appropriate.
Our team will explain the sedation process, preparation requirements, and recovery expectations before your appointment.
When IV Sedation May Be Considered
IV sedation may be recommended or discussed for a variety of reasons depending on the patient and procedure.
It may be considered for patients who:
- Experience significant dental anxiety
- Are undergoing a longer procedure
- Need multiple procedures completed
- Have difficulty remaining comfortable during treatment
- Are undergoing wisdom teeth removal
- Are receiving certain implant or surgical treatments
Sedation needs are evaluated individually rather than using the same approach for every patient.
Preparing for Sedation
Before IV sedation, Dr. Duplaga reviews your medical history, current medications, allergies, and other information that may affect treatment.
You will receive specific instructions about eating, drinking, medications, transportation, and other preparations before your appointment.
Because sedation affects alertness and coordination, patients will need a responsible adult to provide transportation and follow the instructions given by our office.
What to Expect With Sedation
During Treatment
Sedation medication is administered through an IV and adjusted throughout the procedure as appropriate. Your condition is monitored while treatment is being performed.
Local anesthesia is also commonly used to help keep the surgical area comfortable.
After Surgery
Patients remain in the office for an appropriate recovery period before leaving with their designated adult.
Drowsiness and reduced alertness may continue after the appointment, so patients should follow all activity, medication, and recovery instructions provided by our team.
