Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures use dental implants to create a more secure foundation for tooth replacement. By attaching a denture to strategically placed implants, patients may experience improved stability, comfort, and confidence compared with a traditional removable denture.
At Center for Oral Surgery, Dr. Christopher Duplaga evaluates the condition of the jawbone, existing teeth, oral health, and restorative goals before recommending implant-supported treatment. The number and position of implants depend on the type of denture being planned and the support needed.
This approach can be used for patients replacing an upper arch, lower arch, or both, depending on individual needs and anatomy.
Who May Benefit
Implant-supported dentures may be considered for patients who want greater stability than a conventional removable denture can provide.
Treatment may be appropriate for patients who:
- Are missing most or all teeth in an arch
- Currently wear loose or uncomfortable dentures
- Want improved denture stability
- Have difficulty chewing with removable dentures
- Have adequate bone for implant placement
- Are able to maintain appropriate oral hygiene
- Want a more secure tooth replacement option
Patients with bone loss may still have options depending on the amount and location of available bone. Additional procedures may be discussed when necessary.
How Support Is Created
Treatment begins with an examination and imaging to evaluate the jawbone, gum tissues, bite, and areas where implants may be positioned.
Dr. Duplaga places the implants according to the restorative plan so they can provide support for the future denture. The number of implants needed varies based on the type of restoration, anatomy, and treatment goals.
Bone grafting may be recommended when additional support is needed before or during implant placement.
From Healing to a Secure Fit
After the implants are placed, the surrounding bone needs time to heal and develop a stable connection with them.
Once healing has progressed appropriately, the restorative dentist can complete or modify the denture so it connects with the implants as planned. Depending on the design, the denture may remain removable by the patient or use another implant-supported approach.
Dr. Duplaga coordinates with the restorative provider when needed so implant placement and the final denture work together as part of the same treatment plan.
