Same Day Implants
Same day dental implants may allow qualifying patients to have a damaged or failing tooth removed and a dental implant placed during the same surgical appointment. This approach can reduce the number of separate procedures and streamline part of the tooth replacement process.
At Center for Oral Surgery, Dr. Christopher Duplaga carefully evaluates each patient before recommending immediate implant placement. Bone structure, gum health, the condition of the tooth, overall health, and the planned restoration all help determine whether same day treatment is appropriate.
Same day implant placement does not necessarily mean the permanent replacement tooth is completed that day. The implant still requires time to heal and integrate with the surrounding bone before the final restoration is placed.
Who May Be a Candidate
Same day implants are not appropriate for every patient. A detailed evaluation helps determine whether an implant can be placed predictably at the time of extraction.
Factors may include:
- Adequate bone for implant stability
- Healthy surrounding tissues
- Condition of the tooth being removed
- Presence or extent of infection
- Overall oral and medical health
- Location of the implant
- Long-term restorative needs
If immediate placement is not recommended, Dr. Duplaga can discuss a traditional staged approach that may provide a better foundation for long-term success.
How the Process Works
Treatment begins with an examination and appropriate imaging to evaluate the tooth, available bone, nearby anatomy, and the planned implant site.
If the conditions are favorable, Dr. Duplaga can carefully remove the damaged tooth and place the dental implant during the same appointment. Bone grafting may also be performed when additional support is needed.
Sedation options, including IV sedation when appropriate, can be discussed before surgery.
From Placement to Restoration
After implant placement, the surrounding bone needs time to heal and integrate with the implant. Patients receive individualized instructions for caring for the surgical area and protecting the implant during this period.
Once sufficient healing and stability have been achieved, the restorative phase can move forward. Your dentist or restorative provider can then complete the crown, bridge, or other restoration supported by the implant.
Dr. Duplaga can coordinate with your restorative dentist when needed so the surgical and restorative stages work together as part of the same treatment plan.
