Pterygoid Implants
Pterygoid implants are an advanced implant option used to create support in the back portion of the upper jaw when conventional implant placement may be limited by bone loss or sinus anatomy. These implants are anchored in a deeper area of dense bone to help support full-arch restorations.
At Center for Oral Surgery, Dr. Christopher Duplaga evaluates complex implant cases to determine whether pterygoid implants may help provide the stability needed for treatment. They may be considered for patients who have limited bone in the posterior upper jaw or who want to explore alternatives to more extensive grafting procedures.
Because pterygoid implant placement requires careful anatomical planning, each case begins with a detailed evaluation and imaging.
Who May Benefit
Pterygoid implants may be considered when there is not enough usable bone in the back of the upper jaw for traditional implant placement.
They may be appropriate for patients who:
- Have significant posterior upper jaw bone loss
- Need support for a full-arch restoration
- Have anatomy that limits conventional implant placement
- Want to explore alternatives to sinus grafting
- Are missing most or all upper teeth
- Have experienced long-term tooth loss
- Need additional implant stability in the back of the arch
Dr. Duplaga will determine whether pterygoid implants, traditional implants, or another advanced implant approach best fits your anatomy and restorative plan.
How Placement Is Designed
Treatment planning begins with detailed imaging of the upper jaw, sinus region, surrounding bone, and nearby anatomical structures.
Pterygoid implants are positioned toward the back of the upper jaw to engage stronger bone beyond areas where bone volume may be limited. Their placement is carefully planned to create posterior support for a larger implant-supported restoration.
These implants may be used together with conventional implants or other advanced implant techniques as part of a full-arch treatment plan. Sedation options can also be discussed when appropriate.
Building a Stable Foundation
Following placement, the implants are monitored as the surgical areas heal and stability develops.
The next stage of treatment depends on the overall restorative plan, implant stability, and how the surrounding tissues respond. Temporary or final restorations are planned according to the individual case.
When coordinated care is needed, Dr. Duplaga works with the restorative dental provider to help ensure the implant positions support the planned full-arch prosthesis.
Advanced Implant Treatment Close to Home
Center for Oral Surgery provides pterygoid implant evaluations and surgical treatment from our Wheeling office for patients throughout the Ohio Valley.
We welcome patients from:
- Moundsville, WV
- New Martinsville, WV
- Weirton, WV
- St. Clairsville, OH
- Steubenville, OH
- Washington, PA
If limited bone in the back of the upper jaw has made traditional implant treatment more difficult, Dr. Duplaga can evaluate whether pterygoid implants may provide another option.
Office Hours
Monday to Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pmIf you have extensive upper tooth loss or have been told that conventional implant placement may be difficult because of bone loss, schedule an evaluation with Dr. Christopher Duplaga at Center for Oral Surgery.
Our team can review your anatomy, explain the available implant approaches, and help determine whether pterygoid implants may be appropriate for your treatment plan.
